Before turning to the ascension itself, it is important to consider the question whether there were any prior ascensions to that recorded in Acts 1. A number of expositors hold that Christ ascended to heaven on the day of His resurrection and that this is implied in John 20:17 and Hebrews 9:6–20. Support for this concept of a prior ascension is based upon typology.
